How to take care of your teak outdoor furniture?

Though teak is known to be durable and can last changing weather conditions over time, giving them extra care would not hurt. In fact, it is even at your advantage because it extends the life of your teak furniture.

Teak is naturally golden brown in color.  With constant and prolonged exposure in the outdoors, however, the color of teak may change gradually to silver gray until it slowly becomes greenish.  This is not really a sign of deterioration of whether its durability or beauty because the changing of teak color is still pleasant to the eyes. Nevertheless, you can still make it stay golden brown if that is what you prefer. Here are some steps to maintain your furniture color and extend the life of your furniture.

First of all, you have to keep your furniture clean and free from dirt.  Most of the time, cleaning is the easiest and surest way to keep your things, including your furniture, in their best condition.  Scrub the furniture with soapy water and rinse them properly with a garden hose or a pressure jet. Once they have been cleaned, they must be completely dry after a few moments.  You have to make sure that no moisture will be trapped within the wood to avoid black spots when they are applied with teak oil.

Next, you have to sand the surfaces of your teak furniture so that they are maintained to be smooth and remain to be comfortable to sit upon or leaned on.  Teak oil may be applied to prevent the change of its golden brown color.  Teak oil is not to preserve the life and durability of your furniture but only to maintain its natural color.  Teak contains natural oil to protect itself from decaying, rotting, swelling, or warping.

You would just have to repeat the easy cycle of sanding and applying teak oil in certain intervals (commonly every three months or so) to maintain your furniture color and smooth finish.  To obtain best results, just follow the application instructions written on the teak oil labels.

Humidity and moisture are the common causes of wood deterioration. After a very long time, your teak furniture may be affected by these factors.  It is best that you prevent the speeding up process of deterioration of your furniture by following these tips.

Protect & care of outdoor teak furniture include moving them to an enclosed or shaded space especially when winter season is yet to take place.  On the other hand, if you do not have other space or spare rooms in your home for the furniture, there are still some other ways.

Another good way to take care of outdoor teak furniture is to use the proper wood patio furniture covers.  You must also consider certain fabric for covers to make sure they can indeed protect your furniture from the weather, soil, dirt, dust, insects, and all other harmful foreign elements.

In choosing the right cover, you need to have in mind the following considerations: (1) is it durable and does not easily tear apart, (2) is the cover fabric breathable so that it won't sweat inside, (3) is it adjustable and is it having locks and ties to be certain that they fit the furniture, (4) does it protect the furniture to the harms of the sun, and, most importantly, ( 5) is it waterproof. There is nothing more certain of your furniture protection than prevention.

With the natural longevity of teak plus a little effort and care from you, you will be guaranteed to make the most of your teak outdoor furniture longer than you really expected.

Caring for your wood patio furniture might take a little bit of your time but it's worth it.
